Bloomsbury is an area which has no official boundaries but is more or less bordered by Tottenham Court Rd, Euston Rd, New Oxford St, and Gray's Inn Rd.
In 1086 it was reported in the Domesday Book that the area had vineyards and "wood for 100 pigs."
The area today has a number of notable landmarks: The University of London, the British Telecom Tower, the British Museum, and Russell Square, named after the Russell family who developed the area in the 17th and 18th centuries. Great Ormond Street Hospital, which is a national centre of excellence treating children is also situated in Bloomsbury. Bloomsbury was formerly the home of the British Library but this has now been moved to new premises near St Pancras.
