The name 'Bayswater, comes from Baynard's Watering, a name first recorded in 1653. Baynard, or Bainiardus, was one of the early tenants of the land, which originally belonged to the Abbey of Westminster. This was shortened to Bayswater. The watering part of the name stems from the excellent spring water found in the area.
