Some of the experiences and changes we have seen over the past 30 years as a London house clearance company:
The Internet and web advertising is only about 15 years old, and back in the early 1980's our customers would contact us via the local newspapers, the BT directory, Yellow Pages, or Thompsons, along with our established private and trade clients. At that time boot fairs had just come about and the first boot fair ever was organised by Fr Harry Clark, a Catholic priest, after seeing a similar event happen in Canada. Most boot sellers would be just having a clearout, or even selling household goods and collectables from a deceased estate, but because they had no idea what they were selling, the antique dealers prowling around were having a field day, making a small fortune from buying valuable antiques and collectables, for just a few pounds, but since the advent of the Antiques Roadshow, A Fortune in your Attic, Boot Fair Challenge, and similar programmes, the public have become educated and quite aware of values, and with Ebay as a recognised auction site, it is possible for anybody to find out the value of almost anything that exists.
It was in the early 90s when CERN publicised the new World Wide Web project (Hence www.), two years after British scientist Tim Berners Lee had begun creating HTML, HTTP, and the first web pages at CRN. Up until this time, because printed advertising was mainly a local thing, companies chosen to carry our house clearances in London would have had physical addresses locally or within the city. Jeffrey Avery and Associates were the first company to have a London House Clearance Website, and I remember the first day our website appeared, waiting for the phone to ring off the hook - but it didn't ring.
