Probate Valuation Farnham Photo of Bronze Dog

At a recent probate valuation in Talbot Road, Farnham, Surrey GU9 8RR probate valuers report to include Chinese bronze Fu Dog

Jeffrey Avery & Associates are regularly carry out probate valuation in Surrey, but it was during a probate valuation of chattels in Talbot Road, Farnham that the ornamental Chinese bronze Fu Dog was discovered. We have also carried out probate valuation in Ewhurst, Fairmile, Farleigh, Felbridge, Frensham, Frimley and Gatton but it was during the house contents valuation for probate in Farnham that the Chinese dog was discovered.

The name Fu Dogs are actually derived Chinese “foh” (recited in Chinese as Buddha) because these beings are found as stone mounting guardians at Buddhist temples. They are considered sacred in Buddhism, where most deities are depicted sitting on it. It is the emblem of wisdom, power and protection, which could be the reason why they are being embroidered on ancient Chinese official robes. These powerful guardians are fun to own like a lovely pair of real dogs at our homes and are easy to tame. This powerful symbol provides potent protection and demon scaring for ancient palaces, banks, mansions, shops, malls, businesses, hotels and jewellery shops. Their faces may look like lions, but take note that they are different from the actual lions. The male is usually depicted holding a globe to signify important global network for business people outside and external protection, while the female holding a child signifies protection of members of the household or premise. The male is placed on the left (from inside looking out of your premise) and the female holding a child is placed on the right (from inside looking out of your premise).

Our RICS probate valuation will ensure that the chattels are not under or overvalued.

RICS Probate Valuation Chertsey, Surrey KT16 – Probate Valuers Find Unusual African Tribal Mask

Probate Valuation Chertsey Photo of African Mask

Probate Valuation Chertsey Photo of African Mask

During a recent probate valuation in Cowley Avenue, Chertsey, Surrey KT16 9JL, probate valuers report includes African tribal mask

Jeffrey Avery & Associates are regularly carry out probate valuation in Surrey, but it was during a probate valuation of chattels in Cowley Avenue, Chertsey that the African mask was discovered. We have also carried out probate valuation in Charlwood, Chelsham, Chiddingfold, Chilworth, Chipstaed, Chobham and Claremont, but it was during the probate valuation of house contents in Chertsey that the African mask was uncovered.

Masks of Africa are thought to be some of the most valuable and sought after pieces of art by art collectors around the world. They are priceless in value and are said to hold the keys of connecting the living with the dead. Among African tribes, masks of Africa are believed to portray the faces of gods and spirits. Because of this, African masks are very often designed with the characteristics of animals and humans. All face and head ornaments for Africa rituals and ceremonies fall into one of four categories:

  • the ancestor spirit
  • the mythological hero
  • the combination of ancestor and hero and the animal spirit

Ceremonies in Africa have substantial traditional and cultural importance. Recent understanding of the principle Aesthetics, religious and ceremonial values have given a better insight into the moral values that African artists convey in their art. African masks most times stand for a spirit and it is deeply and sincerely alleged that the spirit of the ancestor possesses the one wearing the mask. Masks of human ancestors or of mythical beings or animals that a clan or family can trace its ancestry to are sometimes the object of family pride, when they are considered as the place where the spirit now is living (possessing), may honor the masks with ceremonies and gifts. Some cultures also suggest that wearing a mask allows the wearer to take on the characteristics of the mask’s specific representations, i.e., a lion mask will cause the wearer to have the attributes of a lion. Dance is commonly involved in the use of the masks of Africa.

Rituals that include the use of or the ceremonial values of African masks span from childbearing/birth to rites of passage ceremonies (typically involving some form of dance rituals). Examples of dance rituals involving African masks are:

  • Agricultural festivals
  • Rituals for increase (money, property, children and others)
  • Rituals for rites of passage
  • Ancestor cults
  • Initiations including secret societies
  • Related Ceremonies
  • Fertility rites

The size and style of the masks of Africa are varied, portraying animals, human faces and more abstract styles in different sizes.

Valuation For Probate By RICS House Contents Valuers, Solicitors Recommendation

April 15th, 2012

The valuation for probate of house contents has now become a serious matter for executors and solicitors.

Almost all solicitors will appoint a qualified RICS surveyor who has the knowledge and expertise to be able to carry out an accurate and fully Inland Revenue compliant probate house contents valuation when acting for a client who is an executor or if he or she as the solicitor has been appointed with the task. The valuer will be well versed with IHT criteria, have a good reputation with IHT officials along with a solid long standing track record. The valuer should also be able to provide credentials, and recommendations from other law firms or estate administrators demonstrating their competence and expertise

Jeffrey Avery & Associates provide valuations for probate purposes, that is for house contents, fine art and antiques, classic cars, stocks and shares, property, boats and caravans, farm machinery and anything that may form part of an estate that is subject to Inheritance Tax. Our weekly articles clearly show the nature of our work and the types of furniture and effects and scenario’s when we value, and can be used to give you an idea of how the process works.

The probate valuation of an estate must be taken seriously, that’s why a solicitor will always use a firm of RICS fine art and chattels valuers who will be taken seriously and have a sound relationship with the probate office at Inland Revenue, and who also have an in depth knowledge of how to assess and prepare an official written probate report. How to accurately put values to chattels at all levels of value, from a few pounds to many thousands, and the latter being the downfall for most executors who believe that its not important when they assume that a the probate value of house contents is in their opinion low. Inland revenue officials will disregard estimates or just a stab in the dark unless of course their is a legitimate reason, and are quite likely to investigate and penalise any executors found to be acting negligently.

There are many factors to take into consideration when dealing with estate probate valuation, and this is purely a summary, so for more accurate information we advise you to call our office and speak to a specialist probate advisor or in house RICS surveyor who will answer your questions if at all possible. We can normally answer all questions, but for more complicated matters we have a probate consultant and probate lawyer on hand to help.

For solicitors and executors who require more information about how to value chattels, or anything else that makes up part of the estate subject to Inheritance Tax and probate please call Jeffrey Avery directly for confidential free advice on 0800 567 7769

House Contents Valuation For Probate – The Importance Of Getting A RICS Valuation Of Chattels

April 10th, 2012
House Contents Valuation For Probate

House Contents Valuation For Probate

House contents valuation for probate – The importance of using a RICS valuer to prepare the probate report – Avoid Inland Revenue investigation

If you need to get a house contents valuation for inheritance tax purposes and reading this article it’s probably because you have been appointed executor of an estate and have to obtain a house contents valuation for probate, and although it might seem a complicated issue it is quite straightforward as long as you appoint a professional firm who use RICS valuers. If a probate valuation of chattels is required a solicitor will advise you that to avoid the risk of challenge by Inland Revenue, the probate valuation of house contents should always be carried out by a RICS qualified surveyor, not a house clearance company, not an antique dealer but an experienced RICS probate valuer who will know exactly what the Inland Revenue require when it comes to appraising house contents and chattels, and the correct procedure when preparing the final written probate report for Inheritance Tax.

A probate house contents valuation is a necessary part of winding up an estate and should be taken seriously, it is unwise to assume that an estimate will suffice, in fact an accurate valuation is now essential if the risk of Inland Revenue investigation is to be avoided, especially if the executor is a beneficiary and the contents have an obvious low value. – A chattels valuation for probate carried out by a RICS valuer is very unlikely to be questioned whereas a probate house contents valuation carried out by an executor, house clearance company or an antique dealer will automatically raise eyebrows at the HMRC probate office. The inland revenue are now looking at any way to raise extra revenue and this type of unqualified valuation of chattels is exactly what IR officials are targeting for investigation.

More and more companies are now claiming to be professional valuers, offering a valuation for probate carried out by unqualified personnel, and submitting a probate valuation report of this nature can put an executor at a high risk of investigation and subsequent penalties. The inland revenue have carried out hundreds of IHT investigations over the last two years and penalised numerous estates for negligence.

Jeffrey Avery & Associates are well versed with IHT law and the associated guidelines and coupled with the fact that all valuations for probate are carried about by valuers who are members of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors. We have built a solid reputation for providing chattels valuations, and house contents valuation for probate and regularly take instructions from solicitors and executors. Our clients are confident with our level of expertise and the ability to provide accurate timely probate valuation reports along with on hand support and advice.

For all matters relating to house contents valuation for probate, cattels valuation, property valuation, assets or any other probate matters please call Jeffrey Avery direct on 0800 567 7769 for confidential advice.

This particular lamp was originally ued with oiul but had been converted to electricity later reducing its value somewhat. I have enclosed a brief history of Mappin and Webb so please read on.

Founded in 1774 by Jonathan Mappin, Mappin & Webb is one of the UK’s leading retailers of fine jewellery and silverware. Today, it is renowned for combining timeless craftsmanship with superior quality and contemporary design to produce exquisite jewellery, elegant silverware, watches and glassware.  Jonathan Mappin opened his first small silversmith workshop in Sheffield in 1774 and the following year the Mappin mark was entered at the assay office. Over the next fifteen years Jonathan Mappin’s reputation for producing high quality silver spread throughout Sheffield. From these humble beginnings the business grew steadily and soon the next generation were expanding the business further. The first store to be opened in London was in 1849 at 17 Fore Street and was soon followed by stores in Moorgate and King William Street. In 1858, following rapid expansion of the Sheffield factory, John Newton Mappin invited his brother-in-law, George Webb to join him in the business. The first association of Mappin & Webb was forged.

Mappin & Webb’s reputation spread as the business became a leading name within its field. A testament to its success came in 1897 with the granting of Royal Warrants. Today Mappin & Webb is silversmith to Her Majesty the Queen and to His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales. Mappin & Webb takes great pride in its rich heritage and outstanding reputation, successfully combining all the positive qualities from its past with an innovative approach to design and craftsmanship today.

RICS Probate Valuation Ashstead, Surrey KT21 – 20th Century Bronze by Chavignier Valued for IHT

April 9th, 2012

Probate Valuation Ashstead Photo of Chavignier Bronze

Probate Valuation Ashstead Photo of Chavignier Bronze

In a recent probate valuation in Oakfield Rd. Ashstead  Surrey KT21, probate valuers report includes Chavignier abstract bronze sculpture

Jeffrey Avery & Associates are regularly carry out probate valuation in Surrey, but it was during a probate valuation of chattels in Oakfield Road, Ashstead, Surrey KT21 that the Chavignier bronze was seen. We have also carried out probate valuation in Abinger, Addlestone, Albury, Alfold, Ash, Ash Vale, and Ashford, but it was during the probate vauation of house contents in Ashstead that the Chavignier bronze abstract was appraised for probate and IHT.

Louis Chavignier is well known for a sculpture called “Vaisseau Lunaire” which he created especially for Expo 67.

“The sculpture represents a boat, which inspired the piece’s name: Vaisseau Lunaire,” writes Cité des Rivières official website. “The boat hull is made of stainless steel square tubing and the sail structure, of cylindrical tubing also in stainless steel. The sails are represented by stainless steel chains. It is a colossal piece, literally, measuring 22 feet long by 15 feet high by 3 feet wide, typical of lively art realised by several artists belonging to the Visual arts research group in Paris at the end of the 1960’s.

“Originally, the piece was installed on the surface of the water, between the France and Québec pavilions [at Expo 67.]  It was then a piece of lively art whose front to back movement, representing a ship rolling with the waves, was ensured by a driving mechanism made of various gears actuated by an electric motor. At the time of its first installation, the pitch of the ship ensured a back-and-forth movement of the sail creating a particular sound effect. Once the sculpture is installed on the surface of the water of the Nations’ Lake in Sherbrooke this sound effect will be assured by the wind engulfing in the sails. The piece is now static, its mechanism and electric motor have been removed because they were now obsolete.” – The sculpture was donated to the City of Sherbrooke by its owner Yves Robillard.

We always carry out extensive research, so by having our RICS probate valuation we will ensure that the chattels are not under or overvalued.

RICS Probate Valuation Bagshot, Surrey GU19 – Victorian Rosewood Console Table Valued for IHT

April 5th, 2012
Photo of Rosewood Console Table in Bagshot Probate Valuation

Photo of Rosewood Console Table in Bagshot Probate Valuation

In a recent probate valuation in London Road Bagshot, Surrey GU19 5HR, probate valuers report includes good quality 19th century console table

Jeffrey Avery & Associates are regularly carry out probate valuation in Surrey, but it was during a probate valuation of chattels in London Road Bagshot GU19 5HR  that the fine table was valued. We have also carried out probate valuation in Banstead, Betchworth, Bisley, Bletchingley, Blindley Heath, Bookham and Box Hill, but it was during the probate vauation of house contents in Bagshot that the table was valued.

Rosewood is a characteristically dark, highly grained wood from trees in the genera Tipuana, Pterocarpus, or Dalbergia. Trees from other species may also be sold as “rosewood,” since this wood has been traditionally prized for fine woodworking and musical instruments for centuries. Unfortunately, due to unsustainable harvesting practices, some rosewoods are in critical condition, and some ecologists believe that forests in regions like Brazil should be allowed to recover before any more rosewood is harvested.

Rosewoods range in color from rich red to very dark brown. Older trees often have a rich aroma, especially Brazilian or Rio rosewood; the smell is reminiscent of roses, which explains the name. Older trees also accumulate essential oils, which can help to preserve the wood and to maintain the sweet, rich scent associated with rosewood. In some cases, the essential oil is extracted from the trees and sold as a perfume or furniture polish.

Our RICS probate valuation will ensure that the chattels are not under or overvalued.

RICS Probate Valuation Reading, Berkshire – Fine Georgian Bowfront Cabinet Valued For IHT

April 4th, 2012
Photo of Georgian Cabinet in Reading Probate Valuation

Photo of Georgian Cabinet in Reading Probate Valuation

In a recent probate valuation in Reading, Berkshire our probate valuer lists a fine mahogany Georgian cabinet on chest

Jeffrey Avery & Associates are regularly instructed to carry out probate valuation in Berkshire and it was during the valuation of chattels at a Reading address that the good Bow front chest was valued. We have also carried out probate valuation in Caversham, Coley, Emmer Green, Hurst, Southcote, Whitley and Whitley Wood, but it was during the probate vauation of house contents in Reading that the cabinet was inspected.

The Georgian period, so named after the first four King Georges, lasted from about 1714 to 1820. A few of the period’s most influential furniture designers were Thomas Sheraton and George Hepplewhite (whose first name is coincidental). Contemporary furniture styles included the French Régence, Directoire and the internationally adopted Empire style (known in German-speaking nations as Biedermeier style and in England as Regency).

The remainder of the contents were general and of a modest value so the total valuation was less than £2000 and with the estate subject to IHT this meant an added tax liability of around £800. Our RICS probate valuation will ensure that the chattels are not under or overvalued.
