House Clearance Surrey – Discovery of Rare 1908 Olympic Programme.

The sport of house clearance: Surrey based Jeffrey Avery & Associates recently found a very rare 1908 Olympic programme from The Great Stadium, Shepherds Bush, London. It is believed to be the only one known. The discovery was made during a house clearance in Surrey along with other Olympic memorabilia. Guildford in Surrey. As we were clearing the garage of the Guildford property of general rubbish we came the programme inside a tea chest, “we almost threw it away” but the material was put away for safe keeping. The collection checked later back at my premises and a good amount of Olympic memorabilia and photographs stretching from 1908 through to the sixties were found. I thought what a coincidence for it to turn up at this time with the Olympics just a few months away. The previous owner has sadly passed away. “Its not uncommon for us to find unusal items in our house clearances, Surrey in particular seems to throw up a lot of historical artifacts”

After realising how important the Olympic programme was i contacted Richard Poad, chairman of Maidenhead Heritage Centre, and offered to loan the programme for their exhibition “Our Sporting Life” which starts in the first week of April for about 8 weeks. The exhibition has an entire section dedicated to Lord Desborough a local Maidenhead man who was an Olympic fencer, as well as rower, mountain climber and lots else besides, who single handed organised the 1908 Olympic Games at The Great Stadium, Shepherds Bush, London, after the cancellation of its original hosting in Rome due to damage caused by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. We have also contacted the BBC Olympic sports desk who have shown a particular interest, have writen an article which can be found here  http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-16395130

The programme will eventually be added to the “UK House Clearance Museum”, our private collection of artifacts and interesting items, kept for historical purposes and research, this collection will soon be available online to the general public when we have completed building its new website, so watch this space, we have many interesting items ready to exhibit.

Original 1908 Olympic Programme

House Clearance Guildford, Surrey Unearths Rare UK Olympic Programme.

Sporting house clearance in Surrey. Local firm Jeffrey Avery & Associates recently discovered an extremely rare original 1908 Olympic programme from The Great Stadium, Shepherds Bush, London, believed to be the only one in existence. It was discovered along with other Olympic memorabilia during a recent house clearance, in West Clandon near Guildford in Surrey. We were clearing the garage of general rubbish and came across a tea chest and when i checked inside, i discovered the collection amongst old newspapers, it was almost thrown away but i noticed the material and put it away for safe keeping. I checked the collection later back at my premises and found a large amount of Olympic memorabilia and photographs stretching from 1908 through to the sixties. It was very exciting for me and i thought what a coincidence for it to turn up at this time with the Olympics just a few months away. The previous owner who has sadly passed away was a professional body builder and close friend to Johnny Weissmuller, who represented the USA and became 5 times Olympic swimming gold medalist in the 1920′s, who was also famous for his role as “Tarzan”. Jeff Avery said that “Its not uncommon for us to find unusal items in a house clearance, Guildford Surrey in particular seems to throw up a lot of historical artifacts”

I realised how important the Olympic programme was and contacted Richard Poad, chairman of Maidenhead Heritage Centre, and offered to loan the programme for their exhibition “Our Sporting Life” which starts in the first week of April for about 8 weeks. The programme was so rare that the BBC news desk contacted me and has written a story which can be found at  http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-16395130

Dangers Of Clutter In The Home

Friday, November 11th, 2011

Too much build up of clutter in a property can be a serious issue and as a London house clearance firm it’s something we know all too well. One of the problems with clutter clearance and the build up inside a property is that sometimes it can lead to hidden dangers which you may not be aware of, including the accumulation of dangerous waste materials.

Which Waste is Dangerous?

Dangerous waste is any type of waste that poses a real health risk. It can be so dangerous, in fact, that you can be prosecuted if it is not dealt with properly. We are often called in to deal with such waste when other people have failed to deal with it properly, so it is a serious issue.

Dangerous waste can include:

  • Bodily fluids
  • Faeces, both animal and human
  • Drugs and paraphernalia
  • Rotting food

As you can imagine, these can pose some serious health hazards to anyone who comes into contact with them so they have to be treated very carefully.

Vermin

One of the biggest problems we encounter when dealing with a house clearance is posed by vermin. Vermin waste can cause a host of problems including a number of quite nasty diseases, some of which can even be fatal. Some of the ones to watch out for include Weil’s disease which comes from rat urine and can be transmitted through direct contact. E.coli, salmonella and histoplasmosis are just a few of the other nasty ones.

Drugs

Drug paraphernalia can be particularly problematic as well, and a property which has been used as a drugs den needs special treatment. Old needles and syringes pose a myriad of problems including the risk of HIV and Hepatitis, so they have to be dealt with very carefully during a house clearance.

Hire the Specialists to Deal with Dangerous Waste

As a house clearance specialist, we know all about the problems posed by dangerous waste and as a result we are trained and equipped to deal with it effectively. In such situations it’s always better to let the specialists take control. We always wear the right protective clothing and use specialist equipment in these situations, and we are licensed to dispose of the waste correctly. Never take risks with such waste problems and always allow us to do it for you.

Our House Clearance Partners – Charities And Recyclers

Wednesday, May 18th, 2011

You may be surprised to learn that we don’t always work alone when it comes to providing a complete service to our customers when carrying out a London house clearance. Clients will find that we also team up with a number of professionals to provide an even better service which allows you to get even more when you organise a house clearance with us.

Here are a few of the professionals and organisations we regularly team up with:

Charities

When we clear a property, we don’t just dump all of the contents. Instead, we regularly recycle or reuse 85% of everything that we collect. The emphasis is always on reusing, however, because this is the best type of recycling that there is.

As a result, we have teamed up with a number of charities across the country to ensure that the contents that we collect goes to the best place where it will be put to use to help others. It’s good to know that when you hire us for a house clearance your old items will be sent on somewhere else where they will be put to good use.

Auction Houses

Where valuable items are involved in a house clearance, we can use these to offset the price of the clearance. To help us get the best prices for items we have teamed up with auction houses where the items will be sold to the highest bidder. If you have anything in your property which you don’t want recycled or reused but sold then we have the contacts to make this happen quickly and easily.

Plumbers, Electricians, Gas Safe Engineers

Following a house clearance, we often provide extra services to secure a property. This can involve cutting off the water, gas and electricity supplies to isolate the property. Obviously this is a job for which we team up with professionals such as plumbers, electricians and gas engineers to ensure that it is carried out properly.

Locksmiths

One of the most important services following a house clearance is making sure that the property is made secure. If a property is left unoccupied then it can be at greater risk of burglary, so we can arrange for a locksmith to visit the property to provide it with new locks on the doors and windows to keep it safe whilst it is not being used.

Take Advantage of All Our Services

Because our speciality is house clearance, Clients can take advantage of an excellent service in this respect. However, by teaming up with other professionals and organisations we can provide you with a more complete service to make your life even easier when you need to arrange a house clearance.
